The Basics of Plasma Cutters
Plasma cutting, also known as plasma arc cutting, revolutionizes the way we process electrically conductive materials. It harnesses the power of an accelerated jet of hot plasma to slice through thick gauge materials efficiently and cost-effectively.
CNC cutting plasma (plasma arc cutting) is a melting process in which a jet of ionised gas at temperatures above 20,000°C is used to melt and expel material from the cut. Cutting Capabilities
Plasma cutters excel at handling materials up to 6" thick, making them ideal for processing large sheet metal parts. Their ability to cut through thick materials quickly and efficiently sets them apart from other cutting methods. However, it's worth noting that for more detailed work and creating holes, CNC laser cutters might be a better choice as they excel in such applications where plasma cutters might struggle.
Working Principle
The core of plasma cutting lies in the transformation of gas into a highly energized state known as plasma. When energy and heat are applied to a gas, its molecules begin to move faster and collide more vigorously. This process transforms the gas into a plasma, a state where the gas's electrons are stripped away from their atoms, creating a charged mixture.
Compressed air or other inert gases are used to direct and accelerate this plasma out of a plasma torch. As the plasma jet strikes the workpiece, it completes an electrical arc with the conductive material. This arc generates intense heat, melting the material and allowing the plasma jet to cut through it cleanly and precisely.
Advantages
Plasma cutting offers several advantages over traditional cutting methods. Its ability to handle thick materials makes it suitable for a wide range of applications. Additionally, plasma cutters are generally more cost-efficient to operate than high-powered CNC laser cutters, especially when processing larger workpieces.
