Why 0.8mm Sheet Metal Needs Special Fastening Methods

When working with thin metal parts, fastening is often more complicated than it first appears. A connection that works well on a thicker sheet may not provide the same performance when the material is only 0.8mm thick.

This is particularly important when installing threaded fasteners such as PEM nuts into stainless steel enclosures, chassis, brackets, and other custom sheet metal components.

Why Does Sheet Thickness Matter?

The strength of a mechanical fastening connection depends partly on how much material is available around the fastening point.

With thicker sheet metal, there is more material to support the fastener and resist forces such as pull-out, rotation, and deformation.

With 0.8mm sheet metal, the available material is limited.

This does not automatically mean that a PEM nut cannot be used. However, the fastener, hole size, material, and installation method need to be carefully evaluated.

For example, a connection that is perfectly adequate for a lightly loaded cover may not be suitable for a chassis that will experience repeated assembly or vibration.

What About 0.8mm Stainless Steel?

Stainless steel adds another consideration.

0.8mm SUS304 stainless steel is relatively strong, but the sheet itself is still very thin. Therefore, the fastening area needs to be evaluated as a complete structure rather than simply asking whether the PEM nut can physically be installed.

This is why thin stainless steel sheet metal fabrication often requires more engineering consideration than simply cutting and bending the material.

Why Doesn't “The PEM Nut Is Installed” Mean “The Connection Is Strong Enough”?

This is an important distinction.

A PEM nut may be successfully installed into a sheet without obvious problems during production. However, the connection may still need to withstand:

  • Tightening torque
  • Pull-out forces
  • Repeated assembly and disassembly
  • Vibration
  • Local deformation
  • Long-term mechanical loads

If the surrounding sheet does not provide enough support, the fastening point may become loose or deformed over time.

Therefore, installation feasibility and application performance should be considered separately.

What Factors Should Be Reviewed?

Before selecting a fastening method for thin sheet metal, several factors should be checked:

Bahan:
SUS304, carbon steel, aluminum, and other materials behave differently during fastening.

Thickness:
0.8mm, 1.0mm, and 1.5mm sheet metal can require different solutions.

Fastener specification:
The PEM nut should be suitable for the specific material and thickness.

Hole geometry:
Hole diameter, edge distance, and surrounding geometry can affect the connection.

Application:
Repeated assembly, vibration, tightening torque, and mechanical loads all influence the required fastening strength.

Part design:
The location of the fastener and the surrounding structure can also affect performance.

What Are the Options?

Depending on the application, several solutions may be considered.

A suitable PEM fastener designed for thin sheet may be sufficient for some applications.

In other situations, the fastening area may benefit from additional reinforcement, such as a welded reinforcement structure.

Other possibilities include modifying the fastening location, increasing local material thickness, or selecting a different fastening method.

The important point is that there is no single fastening solution that is correct for every 0.8mm sheet metal application.

Engineering Review Before Production

For custom sheet metal parts, the best approach is to evaluate the fastening method together with the CAD design and actual application requirements.

Instead of asking only:

“Can we install this PEM nut?”

the better question is:

“Will this fastening connection remain reliable during actual use?”
