PEM Nuts in 0.8mm Stainless Steel: Press-Fit or Weld?

Installing PEM nuts into thin stainless steel can be challenging. For 0.8mm SUS304, direct press-fitting may be suitable in some applications, but it may not always provide enough support for demanding mechanical requirements.

So when should you use a press-fitted PEM nut, and when should you consider welding reinforcement?

Can PEM Nuts Be Press-Fitted Into 0.8mm Stainless Steel?

Sometimes, yes.

The answer depends on the specific PEM nut, material, thickness, hole design, installation process, and application requirements.

A fastener specifically designed for thin sheet may provide a reliable connection when the loading conditions are relatively low.

However, simply choosing a PEM nut because it fits the hole is not enough.

The connection needs to be evaluated for the actual application.

Why Can Direct Press-Fitting Be a Concern?

With only 0.8mm of stainless steel, there is limited material surrounding the PEM nut.

This can reduce the available support against:

  • Pull-out
  • Nut rotation
  • Local deformation
  • Repeated tightening
  • Vibration

The risk becomes more significant when the enclosure or chassis will be assembled and disassembled repeatedly.

For example, if a screw is repeatedly tightened into the PEM nut, the fastening point needs to maintain its structural integrity throughout the product's service life.

Why Consider Welding Reinforcement?

When the existing sheet does not provide sufficient support, welding reinforcement can strengthen the fastening area.

The purpose of the reinforcement is to create a stronger local structure around the PEM nut.

Instead of relying only on the thin 0.8mm sheet, the fastening load can be distributed through the reinforced area.

This can help improve resistance to local deformation and mechanical loads.

However, welding should not automatically be added to every thin sheet metal part.

It is a solution to be considered when the design and application require additional support.

How Should the Correct Method Be Selected?

There are several questions our engineering team would normally review before making a recommendation:

1. What is the material?

SUS304, mild steel, and aluminum have different mechanical properties and manufacturing characteristics.

2. What is the thickness?

0.8mm sheet metal requires more careful consideration than thicker material.

3. What PEM nut is being used?

The fastener must be suitable for the material and thickness.

4. What loads will the connection experience?

Repeated tightening, vibration, pull-out forces, and structural loads can all affect the recommended solution.

5. Where are the PEM nuts located?

Edge distance, nearby bends, holes, and surrounding geometry can influence the strength and manufacturability of the fastening point.

A Practical Engineering Approach

For a custom 0.8mm SUS304 enclosure, we would not recommend automatically choosing either press-fitting or welding without reviewing the design.

Instead, the CAD model should be reviewed together with the PEM nut specifications and application requirements.

If direct press-fitting provides sufficient support, it can remain a simple and cost-effective solution.

If the fastening area requires additional structural support, welding reinforcement may be a better option.

This approach helps avoid unnecessary processing while ensuring that critical fastening points are not under-designed.

Thin Sheet Metal Requires More Than Just Fabrication

Custom sheet metal fabrication is not simply about cutting, bending, and assembling parts according to a drawing.

Material thickness, fastening methods, welding, tolerances, and final assembly all need to work together.

For thin stainless steel components, an engineering review before production can help identify potential fastening problems before they become manufacturing or assembly issues.
