What is a key fob

A key fob is a tiny remote control with an RFID chip and an antenna inside. Modern key fobs use radio frequency identification (RFID) or Bluetooth to communicate wirelessly with a receiver. When you press a button (or come within range), the device sends a coded signal that unlocks, starts, or grants access.

 

The word "fob" originates from the old German word "fuppe," meaning a small pocket. In the 1800s, a fob pocket was a small pocket in trousers or vests designed to hold a pocket watch or other small items. Over time, "fob" came to refer to any small accessory attached to a keychain or used to remotely control something.

 

A key fob programmer is a device or tool used to program or reprogram key fobs so they can communicate with a specific vehicle or electronic system. It syncs the key fob's internal chip (transponder or remote signal) with the car's onboard computer or access control system.
